Why Engagement Sessions are Important

Engagement sessions are SO important in the wedding planning process and are something I highly encourage to be photographed by your wedding photographer. Every once in a while, I will have brides ask to do away with their engagement session or swap it for something else because they don’t feel like they need one. OR, some brides will tell me that they have a best friend or family member who is already taking their engagement photos and they no longer need it. However, there are so many reasons why engagement sessions are important to be photographed by the one capturing your big day, so let’s dive in!

Reason One

It builds trust. Having your engagement pictures taken by your wedding photographer adds value to your wedding day! This is likely the only time you will be working with your photographer before your wedding day and this will give you time to build a trusting relationship with them. Meeting up and working with your photographer will allow you to feel more comfortable on your wedding day, and allows you to get to know the photographer’s style. It also helps you get used to being in front of their camera! Getting your pictures taken can be uncomfortable and nerve-wracking (I get it!), but that’s why I believe it’s so important to create a connection between your photographer before the big day!

Reason Two

It doesn’t have to be long. Maybe an entire engagement session isn’t for you, and that’s fine! If you don’t think you need the full one to two-hour session, we can always do a mini session. This option would be better than entirely opting out of an engagement session. You’ll still be able to get to know your photographer AND you’ll have beautiful photos to remember this journey by.

Reason Three

Showcases your story. The most important part of your engagement session is for you to have fun!! Your engagement session should tell your story as a couple. You can choose a sentimental or a meaningful location for the two of you, such as where you met, had your first date, or where the proposal happened! Another fun idea is to incorporate your fur babies! I absolutely love dogs, so when a couple asks to bring their pups to their session I am ALL for it! In addition to pets, you can also bring props such as flowers, your favorite drinks, etc.

Engagement sessions add far more value than simply having your photos taken. Everywhere from gaining trust and growing comfortable with your photographer, documenting this journey in your life, and more. Plus, getting dressed up for an engagement session is an excuse to go out for a date night 😉
